How to Properly Wear an Ihram?

The journey of Umrah begins with a single, pure intention to fulfill your call for Umrah, and it starts with knowing how to properly wear the Ihram. Ihram is not just a garment; it signifies your transition into a state of purity and humility before Allah. Wearing it correctly ensures your pilgrimage is valid while maintaining the Sunnah and spiritual focus you need during your journey.

What is the Ihram?

Ihram consists of two simple, unstitched white cloths for men:
1. The Izar (lower garment wrapped around the waist)
2. The Rida (upper garment draped over the shoulders)

For women, Ihram is their regular modest clothing that covers the body completely, without wearing gloves or covering the face directly.

Steps to Wear the Ihram Properly

1. Preparation Before Wearing the Ihram:

• Take a ghusl (ritual bath) or perform wudu if ghusl is not possible.

• Trim your nails and remove unwanted hair.

• Apply non-fragrant soap before entering Ihram, as using scented products is prohibited once in the state of Ihram.

2. Wearing the Izar:

• Wrap the lower cloth around your waist, ensuring it is above your navel and below your knees.

• Use a belt or a clip to secure it so it does not slip while walking.

• Ensure it is comfortable, allowing ease for prayers and walking during your rituals.

3. Wearing the Rida:

• Drape the upper cloth over your shoulders, leaving the right shoulder uncovered during Tawaf (Idtiba’) and covering both shoulders otherwise.

• Adjust it so it is comfortable and secure without using pins unless necessary for modesty.

4. Niyyah and Talbiyah:

Once you reach the Miqat, make your intention for Umrah, stating clearly in your heart or verbally,
“Labbaik Allahumma Umrah.”
Then, begin reciting the Talbiyah:
“Labbaik Allahumma Labbaik, Labbaik la shareeka laka Labbaik…”
to enter the state of Ihram fully.

Things to Avoid While in Ihram:

Do not use perfumes or scented soaps.
